Reach Leh by Road

Buses, jeeps, trucks and bikes are the common modes of transport to reach Leh by road. Leh has two national highways connecting it to the rest of India. There is one highway connecting Leh and Manali and another one connecting Leh and Srinagar (National Highway No. 1D).

Reach Leh by Bus

Regular bus services to the city are available. The bus services are private and state bus services. Bus services are available when highway connecting Leh to other parts of northern India remains open in favorable weather conditions. HPTDC or Himachal Pradesh Tourist Development Corporation and HRTC and Himachal Pradesh Road Transport have buses running between Leh and Manali.  The journey between Leh and Manali by bus has overnight stay at Keylong. The price of tickets is between Rs. 1500 to Rs. 2000. Bus services joining Leh and different parts of Jammu & Kashmir are run by Jammu & Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation or JKSRTC. Bus services are available on Srinagar-Leh Highway with overnight stop at Drass or Kargil. The ticket price is about Rs. 1000.

Manali-Leh bus services are available from different private bus operators. The bus services with or without overnight stop are available. Direct buses are there between Leh and Delhi and the in between stops are at Keylong and Manali.

Reach Leh by Truck

Trucks are used for traveling between Manali and Leh. The journey may not be comfortable but it is definitely a cheaper one. You will have to pay around Rs. 500 to the truck drivers to reach Leh from Manali. It is advisable to look for a truck that is carrying less numbers of passengers.

Reach Leh by Bikes

For the bikers, the road between Manali and Leh is like a paradise. Travelers can use their own bikes or get bikes on hire to travel between Manali and Leh. The bike tour between Leh and Manali is generally a three day tour. On day 1 the travelers start from Manali and reach Jispa ; on day 2nd  they start from Jispa and reach Pang; on day 3 they travel from Pang to Leh. It is important to carry all types of accessories while traveling as bike workshop between Leh and Manali are available at Keylong only.

Reach Leh by Taxi or Jeep

Leh can be reached by hiring taxi or jeep. Many travelers come to Leh from Manali by taxi. They start from Manali at very early hours about 3-4 AM in the morning and reach Leh City by night. The travelers take breaks in between but overnight stay is not needed. The price of journey from Leh to Manali by taxi or Jeep will cost around Rs. 1500 - Rs. 2000. Many travelers prefer to take shared taxi to reach Leh City. Many travel agents offer shared and private taxi services. Shared taxi will cost much lesser but in many cases, there is an overnight stay at Darcha or Keylong.

Reach Leh by Air

Leh can be reached by air as regular flights are available from Delhi, Jammu and Srinagar. The flights are available throughout the year. During winter months, one can reach Leh only through flights.

Go Air, Jet Airways, have Air India have direct flights connecting Leh to Jammu, Srinagar, and Delhi.  Delhi to Leh has daily flights operated by Go Air airlines.

Reach Leh by Train

Leh has no railroad. The nearest railway stations to Leh are Chandigarh and Pathankot. Another station Udhampur is also connected to Leh. A railway line from Bilaspur to Leh connecting Mandi has already been proposed.

Local Transport Services in Leh

The various modes of transport in and around Leh are mainly taxi, jeep, on foot, and bike.
Leh in very small place and has flat terrain that is why travelers can visit many places of interest on foot. The Leh Market, the Leh Palace and few other places within the city can be visited by walking. 
Cars and Jeep are common modes of local transport used in Leh. For local sightseeing like Shanti Palace, local monasteries, Shey Palace and others cars and jeeps are hired. A 6-seater SUV will cost about Rs. 2500 – Rs. 3000 for a local tour in and around Leh. If you are visiting Pangong Lake or Nubra Valley by a 6-seater vehicle would cost Rs. 6,000 - Rs. 8000. To visit this valley or lake, you have to seek inner line permit from the Deputy Commissioner’s Office.
